Cannonball Adderley Quintet - Work Song

I never got to see Nat Adderley perform, but I did get to see the Cannonball Adderley Quintet with a young Joe Zawinul on piano and a teenager named Jon Faddis on trumpet at Boston College back in 1969. (Jon is still around doing studio session work in Los Angeles as one of the top high-note trumpet specialists, and Louis Hayes just put out a new recording!).

Cannonball's Quintet was burning that day, as they were back in 1963 when this performance of WORK SONG was recorded. Take a few minutes and enjoy these extended solos. Nat is on fire, and the whole rhythm section has an incredible groove.

Composer: Nat Adderley; Cannonball Adderley:sax; Nat Adderley: tpt;  Joe Zawinul: piano; Sam Jones:bass; Louis Hayes: drums.

Hallelujah

 Canadian Virtual Choir:

Hallelujah

I am back from vacation, and feeling tender today.

It seems there is a world of hurt out there right now, and we could all use a little comfort today.

There are countless renditions of this song by Leonard Cohen, but this one for piano and women's chorus may be the most beautiful. The arrangement by Joshua Tamayo really uses the choir to its full advantage, and his piano playing is very heartfelt. Many of the singers are front-line workers, and this song is dedicated to all those that have helped us in the long fight against COVID. Have a safe weekend!
