These last few weeks we lost two musical geniuses, both troubled souls but amazingly talented and visionary.
Sly Stone caused a revolution in soul music. Without him there would not be a Parliament/Funkadelics, or a Prince or Kool and the Gang.
Equally monumental is the fact that Brian Wilson (with the help of his musical family of angelic voices The Beach Boys) created a whole genre known as "surf music", and then moved on to create the most memorable 2-3 minute soundscapes in rock n roll.
He envisioned all the vocal parts and the arrangements, and came up with dozens of hits. For a sample of his brilliance, listen to this recording of "God Only Knows" with only the isolated vocal tracks, with brother Carl Wilson on lead vocal:
